Senator Patrick M. Gallivan, representing Elma, has honored two local businesses with the New York State Senate Empire Award. This award is one of the state's highest recognitions for business excellence and longevity.
The New York Store in Lancaster was one of the recipients. Senator Gallivan acknowledged its success and longstanding presence in the community. "Small businesses are the backbone of our community and play a vital role in our state's overall economy," he stated. The store, located on Central Avenue, has been operating for 95 years and specializes in men's clothing and women's sportswear. It was founded by Alan Kurtzman's grandfather in 1929, and now Alan along with his sister Elaine represent the third generation managing the business.
Another recipient of the Empire Award is Ken's Service and Sales located in Marilla. Founded in 1955, this motorsports store sells and services off-road vehicles, ATVs, snowmobiles, motorcycles, lawnmowers, and other outdoor power equipment from its location on Clinton Street. Matt Kelchlin currently owns the family business as a third-generation leader.
The Empire Award honors businesses that demonstrate industry leadership through innovative methods while also contributing to job creation and economic growth. The award also highlights those that make efforts to hire veterans or individuals with disabilities or maintain family ownership across generations.
