Senator Patrick M. Gallivan (R-C, Elma) has announced that Hamburg Public Library will receive $43,750 through the State Aid for Library Construction Program. This funding is designated for the rehabilitation of the parking lot at the Lake Shore Library and is part of a broader allocation of $34 million in capital funds for public library construction and broadband infrastructure projects as provided in the FY2022-2023 State Budget.

"Libraries are important community assets that provide a variety of services to residents of all ages, from books and research material to free internet access and career advancement," Senator Gallivan stated. "The state has an obligation to help ensure these facilities are operating efficiently and can better serve their communities."

A recent survey highlighted a significant need for public library construction and renovation. Over half of New York's more than 1,000 public library buildings are over 60 years old, while another third have been standing for more than three decades. Many local public libraries in New York struggle to accommodate users with disabilities, are energy inefficient, and lack adequate Internet access.

The State Aid for Library Construction Program covers various project activities and expenditures, including constructing new library buildings, adding extensions to existing structures, and renovating or rehabilitating current spaces. Eligible projects may involve roof replacement, purchasing and installing alternative energy resources, new HVAC systems, windows, doors, lighting systems, electrical upgrades, as well as constructing new or replacing old walkways and parking lots. Broadband infrastructure projects also qualify for this funding. Renovations aimed at improving accessibility for patrons with disabilities are given high priority.

For the FY2024-2025 State Budget, the Legislature has allocated $44 million for similar projects set to be announced in 2025.
