The Amherst Central School District has named Patrick Kapperman, Assistant Director of Pupil Personnel Services and Special Education, as the new Assistant Principal at Amherst Central High School. He will begin his new duties on March 6, 2023. He succeeds Scott Lawniczak who was named principal at Amherst Middle School in December.
Kapperman joined the district in 2011 as a special education teacher at Amherst Central High School where he implemented specialized instruction in the grade 9-12 resource room and in integrated co-teaching settings. He collaborated with general education teachers and related service providers to ensure appropriate student progress. During that time, he also served as the high school’s special education department chair for three years and was the high school summer credit recovery program coordinator in 2018.
In 2019, he was appointed as Assistant Director of Pupil Personnel Services and Special Education and in that role continued to work closely with building and central office administration. As assistant director, he served as chairperson for all full-committee CSE meetings for K-12 students and worked closely with the director to hire and supervise Pupil Personnel Services staff. He has established strong collaborative relationships with district families as well as with staff to facilitate successful program decisions. He led the character education committee meetings in partnership with the athletics office and collaborated with athletics and the unified sports staff to coordinate unified participation. He supervised the transition coordinator, community-based internship development, ACCES-VR vocational education process and the Tiger Bonds extracurricular inclusion program.
He is the Therapeutic Crisis Intervention training coordinator for the district and was actively involved in the district's Strategic Action Planning team.
Prior to joining Amherst, he was a seventh- and eighth-grade English teacher and team leader at Campus West Elementary in Buffalo. He earned a dual bachelor of arts degree in English and philosophy from SUNY at Buffalo. From Canisius College, he earned a master’s degree in adolescent students with disabilities and an educational leadership and supervision advanced certificate.
