Senator Patrick M. Gallivan has sponsored a resolution in the New York State Senate to memorialize Governor Hochul to declare February 8, 2025, as Snowmobile Ride Day. This date aligns with International Snowmobile Ride Day.
The initiative aims to celebrate winter weather and the adventure of snowmobiling. The Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation reports that New York State boasts over 10,500 miles of snowmobile trails. These trails span forty-five counties and are maintained by more than 220 clubs, including those within the Erie County Federation of Snowmobile Clubs.
"New York State residents and tourists alike embrace our winter weather and enjoy the thousands of miles of snowmobile trails available across New York, especially in the Upstate region," stated Senator Gallivan. "This resolution is intended to encourage more people to participate in snowmobiling which in turn supports local businesses, boosts our economy and promotes the natural beauty of New York State."
The state's extensive trail network includes lands managed by several entities: OPRHP, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), NYS Canal Corporation, the United States Forest Service, and local governments. Additionally, many private landowners allow snowmobiling on their properties under state-provided insurance coverage.
The Senate adopted this resolution earlier this month.
