Assemblyman David DiPietro has announced that two public libraries in Assembly District 147 will receive approximately $39,375 in state aid for library construction. The funds are part of a larger allocation of $34 million from the FY2023-2024 State Budget aimed at supporting public library construction and broadband infrastructure projects.
DiPietro expressed enthusiasm about the funding, stating, “It’s very exciting to see these funds help support our public libraries in the Assembly District 147 community and others statewide.” He highlighted that "The Cordelia A. Greene Library and the Wyoming Free Circulating Library are both very deserving of this state aid." The funding is expected to facilitate improvements such as heating upgrades, increased parking lot capacity, safety enhancements, and storage solutions to enhance accessibility.
A survey indicated a significant need for public library construction and renovation across New York state, with projects totaling over $1.75 billion. Many of the state's libraries are aging, with more than half being over 60 years old. These facilities often face challenges like energy inefficiency, inadequate internet access due to outdated wiring, and insufficient space for collections and meeting areas.
DiPietro anticipates positive outcomes from these renovations: “I am eager to see the renovation projects completed in the near future for these libraries so our community can enjoy the incredible changes.”
Looking ahead, the FY2024-2025 State Budget has allocated $44 million for similar projects set to be announced in summer 2025. This represents an increase of $10 million from the previous fiscal year, reflecting ongoing support for libraries across New York.
