Police officers across New York State initiate millions of traffic stops each year. Senator Patrick M. Gallivan, a former State Trooper and Sheriff of Erie County, aims to address the natural apprehension many drivers experience when pulled over. He has released a guide intended to alleviate anxiety and help ensure interactions between law enforcement officers and drivers are civil, respectful, and safe for all involved.

The guide was created in collaboration with police officers, attorneys, State Legislators, and officials from the Department of Motor Vehicles. It outlines the rights and responsibilities of drivers and offers best practices and procedures to follow during a traffic stop. According to Gallivan, "Drivers, police officers and taxpayers all benefit from everyone being more informed."

Senator Gallivan expressed his hope that people will find the guide helpful and share it with others. He also emphasized the importance of responsible driving.

"I hope you will find this guide helpful and will share it with others," said Gallivan. "As always, please drive responsibly."
