Senator Patrick M. Gallivan (R-C, Elma) has announced a significant boost for the Graycliff Conservancy with a $1 million Empire State Development (ESD) grant. The grant aims to support the expansion of the visitor center at the Graycliff summer estate on Lake Erie in Derby. This additional funding comes after a previous $250,000 ESD grant that was announced in November 2023.
The Graycliff estate, designed by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, is a popular destination for thousands of visitors each year. Senator Gallivan highlighted the importance of this investment by stating, "Graycliff is one of our region’s greatest architectural assets and the state’s investment will help attract more visitors to our area." He also expressed his anticipation for the project's progression, saying, "I look forward to seeing this project move forward."
The Graycliff Conservancy, Inc. intends to utilize the grant to expand the visitor center to more than double its current size. This expansion will enable the center to accommodate visitors and programs throughout the year, offering space for various activities such as rotating exhibits, workshops, lectures, presentations, special events, and meetings.
The Graycliff estate, constructed between 1926 and 1931 for Buffalo businessman Darwin Martin and his wife Isabelle, sits on 8.5 acres of land with picturesque views overlooking Lake Erie. The non-profit Graycliff Conservancy was established with the mission to acquire, preserve, and restore the property, making it accessible to the public.
The funding for this project is part of the state’s Regional Economic Development Council Initiative, which aims to support projects aligning with a community’s strategic goals. The Regional Councils, established in 2011, work towards boosting the economy and creating jobs by empowering communities, business, and community leaders to develop tailored strategic plans based on their region's unique strengths and resources.
The expansion of the Graycliff visitor center is expected to enhance the overall experience for visitors and further promote the appreciation of this architectural gem.
