Buffalo, NY – On May 24 City officials from the Department of Public Works, Parks and Streets announced that the Michigan Avenue Lift Bridge, which spans the Buffalo River, will be closed to pedestrian and vehicular traffic, starting at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 30th. Advanced bridge notification signs will be posted this week to announce the closure, as well as the posting of additional “Business Open” signage, in conjunction with the detour signage for added direction for users looking to patron the impacted businesses on Ganson Street. Construction of the bridge is expected to take approximately four months.

The $800,000 Michigan Avenue Lift Bridge Project, made possible through federal, state and local funding from the Transportation Improvement Program, involves the rehabilitation of the concrete abutments, replacement of the timber fenders and repairs to the timber dolphins. The City of Buffalo has coordinated with businesses in the area to pause the temporary closure until after the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend.

Vehicular detour signs will be posted to direct travelers around the worksite, as follows: South Park Avenue to Louisiana Street, over the Ohio Street lift Bridge, ending at Ganson Street.

Motorists are urged to use caution in the worksite area and re-route.
