U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Port of Buffalo Peace Bridge border crossing arrested a United States citizen with an active warrant from Santa Rosa, California, on April 29, according to a May 5 announcement.

The arrest is significant because it highlights the role of border officers in identifying individuals who may pose a threat to public safety. By checking travelers against national databases, law enforcement can intercept fugitives attempting to cross borders.

CBP officers encountered a 48-year-old male U.S. citizen returning from Canada while driving a vehicle registered in Pennsylvania. During their inspection, they found that he had an active National Crime Information Center match indicating an arrest warrant for assaulting a child. Officers escorted him to secondary inspection and confirmed that the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office warrant was still valid and that he was indeed the subject of that warrant.

“Thanks to the vigilance and professionalism of our officers, we successfully located and detained a wanted individual out of California,” said Acting Area Port Director Sharon Swiatek. “This action demonstrates our ongoing dedication to protecting our communities by identifying and stopping those who threaten public safety.”

After confirming the details of the arrest warrant, CBP turned over custody of the man to the Buffalo Police Department as a fugitive from justice. Authorities remind the public that criminal charges are allegations until proven in court.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection describes itself as America’s frontline law enforcement organization responsible for ensuring safe travel and trade while enhancing national security through innovation and collaboration.
