Senator Patrick M. Gallivan, along with members of the Senate Minority Conference, has urged Governor Kathy Hochul to rescind Executive Order No. 47.3. This order, which was enacted in response to strikes at correctional facilities across the state, prevents 2,000 terminated state corrections officers from obtaining employment with the State of New York or local agencies.

The letter sent to Governor Hochul describes the order as punitive and highlights its adverse effects not only on correction officers but also on National Guard members who must continue serving in New York's prisons due to insufficient staffing.

"The Executive Order is the wrong thing to do and unfair to the corrections officers and their families," stated Senator Gallivan. "These individuals acted out of concern for their safety inside our prisons. They should be given the opportunity to seek alternative employment with other state agencies or local governments."

Additionally, the letter addresses how this executive order affects sheriff departments managing county jails throughout New York. It argues that prohibiting employment for these trained correction officers complicates hiring processes for county jails seeking necessary personnel.
