Senator Patrick M. Gallivan, along with members of the Senate Minority Conference, has introduced new legislation intended to alleviate financial burdens for New Yorkers amid the state's affordability challenges. The proposed bills seek to remove state income taxes on overtime pay and cash tips, allowing workers to retain more of their earnings.
The legislative package includes two key bills co-sponsored by Senator Gallivan: S.587, which proposes eliminating state income taxes on cash tips considered as wages or compensation, and S.3914, which aims to eliminate state income taxes on overtime pay.
"New Yorkers are facing higher costs for everything from housing to groceries to utilities," said Senator Gallivan. "We need to do what we can to provide relief for hardworking residents and to make our state more affordable. These bills will help workers keep more of the money they earn in tips and overtime. I urge my colleagues to include them in this year’s budget."
This initiative is part of the Senate Minority Conference's "Liberate New York" agenda, focusing on making life more affordable across the state. Additionally, these efforts align with federal initiatives aimed at removing taxes on tips and overtime, potentially offering further financial relief for struggling New Yorkers.
