In the week of May 6, 2024, several bills were passed in the New York State Senate with Senator Gallivan casting his vote on each.
Among the approved bills were S2263, which amends real property actions and proceedings law to prohibit a tenant from being removed from a residential unit for certified medical use of marijuana; S156, designating May as "Maternal Mental Health Awareness Month"; and S1899, designating May as "Korean American Family Month". All these bills received an affirmative vote from Senator Gallivan.
Other notable approvals included S5802A, allowing hunting of deer by individuals aged sixty and older with a crossbow in a special archery season; S2124, adding physician assistants to the definition of “primary care practitioner” within Medicaid managed care programs; and S6922, requiring the establishment of a central registry for reports, audits, plans and public inspections of freight rail operators.
However, not all proposed legislation received Senator Gallivan's support. He voted against S443, which authorizes school districts to establish wards for school board elections in Orange County; S145, exempting the metropolitan transportation authority from reimbursing the state for services provided; and S2863 that would restrict financial assistance from an industrial development agency unless a project has a "regionally significant" economic impact.
Senator Gallivan also rejected bill S3328A requiring fence-line monitoring regulations for toxic air contaminants by major emitters and bill S4621 which sought to expand the definition of an incarcerated individual with serious mental illness.
Despite some oppositions, Senator Gallivan's voting record reflects his commitment to addressing key issues affecting his constituents including health care access, environmental protection, public safety among others.
