Senator Patrick M. Gallivan paid tribute to 68 law enforcement officers who lost their lives in service to New York State at a ceremony held at the Police Officers Memorial in Albany. The event took place on Tuesday, with family members and friends of the deceased present as the names were inscribed on the black granite memorial. This addition brings the total number of honored officers to 1,908, representing local, state, and federal agencies.
“Today, we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice and affirm that we will never forget their service to their communities and their fellow New Yorkers,” stated Senator Gallivan. He added, “As a former Trooper and Sheriff of Erie County, I understand and appreciate the sacrifice and commitment that our law enforcement officers and their families make each and every day.”
The memorial this year included officers who succumbed to illnesses linked to their duties at Ground Zero following the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center. The ceremony was attended by over 500 law enforcement representatives and other participants.
In related efforts, Senator Gallivan has put forward a resolution (J.142) urging Governor Kathy Hochul to declare May 11-17, 2025, as Police Week in New York State.
