The Buffalo Sabres have acquired defensemen Logan Stanley and Luke Schenn from the Winnipeg Jets. In return, Winnipeg receives forward Isak Rosen, defenseman Jacob Bryson, a 2026 fourth-round draft pick, and a 2027 second-round draft pick.
The 2026 fourth-round selection going to the Jets will be whichever is higher between Buffalo’s own pick or Edmonton’s, which the Sabres previously obtained in a trade with Boston.
Logan Stanley, 27, has spent his entire six-year NHL career with Winnipeg. He will become an unrestricted free agent after this season and carries a $1.25 million cap hit for the year. The Kitchener, Ontario native was selected 18th overall in the 2016 draft. This season marks his best offensive performance to date, setting personal records in goals (9), points (21), and average ice time (17:12). Stanley brings additional scoring to a Buffalo defensive group that currently ranks second among NHL teams with 44 goals from defensemen. According to NHL Edge data, he is known for his powerful shot, ranking in the league’s 94th percentile with an average shot speed of 73.64 mph.
Stanley also adds physicality to Buffalo’s lineup. Standing at 6-foot-7 and weighing 231 pounds, he has delivered 96 hits this season—now ranking fifth on the Sabres—and has been involved in 20 fights during his career. One of those occurred at KeyBank Center against Dennis Gilbert in December 2024.
Luke Schenn, age 36, joins his tenth NHL team with this trade. He has played in 1,118 games over an eighteen-season career and is set to become an unrestricted free agent at season’s end as well. Winnipeg retains half of Schenn’s remaining salary as part of the deal.
Schenn is a right-shot defenseman listed at 6-foot-2 and weighing 225 pounds. This season he has averaged just under fourteen minutes per game and ranks seventh across the league with 139 hits. Among active players, only Alex Ovechkin has more than Schenn’s total of 3,799 career hits; Schenn has recorded over two hundred hits each of the past three seasons.
On offense this year for Winnipeg, Schenn posted seven points (one goal and six assists) across forty-six games.
Buffalo’s defensive core features top-four blueliners Rasmus Dahlin, Mattias Samuelsson, Owen Power, and Bowen Byram—all left-handed shots who have performed well throughout the current campaign. Stanley and Schenn add depth behind these players along with right-handers Michael Kesselring and Zach Metsa. Another right-handed defender—Conor Timmins—is recovering from injury but remains an important penalty killer for Buffalo.
Schenn is expected to contribute on special teams as well; he averaged one minute thirty-five seconds per game shorthanded for Winnipeg this season.
Both new additions bring postseason experience: Stanley has played seventeen playoff games over four years while Schenn has appeared in fifty-eight playoff contests—including winning back-to-back Stanley Cups with Tampa Bay in 2020 and 2021. They have played together extensively this season at even strength for Winnipeg.
Isak Rosen was selected by Buffalo in the first round of the 2021 draft and played thirty-one games over three seasons with the team—sixteen coming this year alone. Jacob Bryson joined Buffalo as a fourth-rounder in 2017; he leaves after appearing in two hundred eighty-nine games over six years—including thirty-five this season.
The NHL trade deadline is set for Friday at three o’clock Eastern time.
