The Buffalo Sabres were defeated 5-0 by the New Jersey Devils at KeyBank Center on Friday. Despite recording 42 shots on goal, the Sabres were unable to score against Devils goaltender Jake Allen.

Alex Lyon started in goal for Buffalo and made 18 saves on 23 shots in his first appearance since November 13.

During the first period, Sabres forward Tage Thompson engaged in a fight with Devils’ Stefan Noesen. The two players had a history from their previous meeting in February when Noesen delivered a hit to Thompson’s head that caused him to miss a game.

Defenseman Mattias Samuelsson left the game after being struck in the face with just over twelve minutes remaining in the third period and did not return.

The scoring began with Nico Hischier putting New Jersey ahead at 12:07 of the first period. Arseny Gritsyuk added another goal for the Devils in the second period. In the third period, Brenden Dillon, Paul Cotter, and Gritsyuk scored three more goals to secure New Jersey’s victory.

The Sabres will travel to Minnesota for their next game against the Wild on Saturday night. The puck drop is scheduled for 8 p.m. EST, with pregame coverage starting at 7:30 p.m. on MSG.
