The Buffalo Sabres will face the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday at Little Caesars Arena, aiming to end a five-game winless streak. The matchup is a rematch of their October 22 meeting, which Buffalo won 4-2 in what coach Lindy Ruff described as “probably our best first period of the year.” In that game, the Sabres received goals from Jason Zucker, Tyson Kozak, Jack Quinn, and Alex Tuch. Jack Quinn’s power-play goal early in the third period was the eventual game-winner.
Buffalo’s recent performances have contrasted with that earlier success. On Thursday against Colorado, the team gave up three goals before ten minutes had elapsed. Ruff commented on the importance of a strong start: “We looked at that game, and it was probably our best first period of the year,” he said. “We need to start strong. Yesterday, travel day and off ice; we know that we’ve got to be ready to move right off the bat against these guys.”
Goaltender Colten Ellis made his NHL debut during the previous Detroit matchup and recorded 29 saves for a win. He is expected to start again Saturday. Since that victory over Detroit, Buffalo has allowed an average of four goals per game and has gone 2-4-4 in its last ten games. Opponents have scored in the first period in eight of those contests.
The Sabres are currently missing several players who contributed earlier in the season. Jason Zucker (illness), Zach Benson (lower body), and Jiri Kulich (blood clot) remain out of the lineup.
Saturday’s broadcast will be available locally on MSG starting at 6:30 p.m., with streaming options including Gotham Sports App and ESPN+ for out-of-market viewers. Radio coverage will be provided by WGR 550 and through the Buffalo Sabres App.
Captain Rasmus Dahlin returns after missing three games due to personal leave.
Reflecting on Thursday’s loss to Colorado, Ruff noted defensive challenges: “I think, really through most of the game, our defending inside the D-zone was good,” he said postgame. “Just gave up too many rush opportunities – that hurt us right at the beginning.” According to Stathletes data, Buffalo has allowed 263 shots off opponent rushes this season—sixth most in the NHL—while Detroit ranks just behind with 251 rush shots generated.
Detroit forwards Dylan Larkin and Alex DeBrincat are notable threats on transition plays; DeBrincat ranks fourth among NHL skaters with 40 rush shots this season and is coming off a three-point performance Thursday night.
The Red Wings have posted a record of 5-5-0 since their loss in Buffalo. On Thursday they defeated Anaheim 6-3 to end a three-game losing streak. Goalie John Gibson left that contest with an upper-body injury but returned for practice Friday; he holds an .882 save percentage across ten games for Detroit this season.
Buffalo has lost its last four visits to Little Caesars Arena; its most recent win there came in April 2023.
