The Buffalo Sabres, despite securing a playoff spot, are looking to recover from a recent downturn as they prepare to host the Tampa Bay Lightning on April 6 at KeyBank Center. The team has struggled with slow starts and defensive issues, most recently losing 6-2 in Washington after falling behind early.
The matchup is significant for division standings. The Sabres now trail the Lightning by two points with one fewer game left in the season. A loss could make winning the Atlantic Division difficult.
Players and coaches have acknowledged their recent struggles. “I don’t think anyone in here is happy with our effort and the performance we had on this trip,” said Tage Thompson. He added that playing at home against a top rival offers “a great opportunity for us to respond and set the tone that we want.” Head coach Lindy Ruff said, “A game where there was a lot of intensity last time, and maybe it’s exactly what we need right now.” Alex Tuch echoed these sentiments: “Hopefully, getting back to KeyBank Center gives us a little bit of a jolt that we need… We’re gonna come out with a lot of passion, a lot of energy, and we’re gonna try to take it to them.”
Monday’s game follows an earlier meeting between these teams marked by high scoring and physical play; Buffalo won that contest 8-7 after four power-play goals but also saw over 100 penalty minutes assessed. Ruff commented on lineup changes intended to strengthen defense: “I think we need some hardness around the front of our net… Obviously, our D-zone coverage wasn’t up to par (in Washington), and everybody understands that.”
With only five games remaining before playoffs begin—and home-ice advantage still at stake—the Sabres are focusing on improving their form. Thompson said: “The new goal is to make sure we find our game right before the playoffs.”
Looking ahead, Buffalo faces Tampa Bay without Lightning captain Victor Hedman or forward Brandon Hagel due to injury or personal reasons. Nikita Kucherov remains a key threat for Tampa Bay after posting strong numbers against Buffalo this season.
As both teams seek momentum heading into postseason play, Monday’s result could shape not only divisional rankings but also each club’s confidence moving forward.
