The Buffalo Sabres announced on Apr. 27 that they are preparing for a possible series-clinching game against the Boston Bruins in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs at KeyBank Center.
This matchup is significant as it marks an important test for the Sabres, who have already shown resilience by overcoming deficits and winning both at home and on the road during their postseason return. The team now faces its first opportunity to close out a playoff series.
Coach Lindy Ruff said, “You can expect this to be the hardest game that we’re going to have to play short-term here.” Ruff explained that the Bruins are playing with nothing to lose, which could lead them to take more risks: “When you’re facing that, you’re up against the wall and a lot of times we’re going to see more risk. We might even see their defense involved a lot more. There’s a lot of things you’re going see.”
Several players’ statuses remain uncertain ahead of Tuesday’s game. Forward Josh Norris, who missed two games due to injury, could return, while Tyson Kozak and Jason Zucker—both injured in Game 4—are considered probable according to Ruff.
Ruff discussed what he wants from his team in Game 5: “Get to our game right away, get the puck in behind him, create puck pressure, make sure that we’re backing each other up… A simple game, but played at a real fast pace.” Goaltender Alex Lyon reflected on his approach: “It’s just gamesmanship at the end of the day… you have to go into the game with a somewhat fearless mentality and accept that it might not always go the right way.” Forward Josh Doan described Lyon’s impact: “He gives you a little bit of that boost… When he’s at his best, he’s barking at people.”
Game 5 will take place Tuesday night at KeyBank Center. The broadcast will be available locally on MSG with pregame coverage starting at 7 p.m., while national viewers can watch on TNT, truTV or HBO Max.
