The Buffalo Sabres will host the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at KeyBank Center. Both teams currently have 52 points in the standings, making this matchup significant for their playoff hopes.

The Sabres recently lost 4-3 to the Florida Panthers, marking only their second defeat in the last 15 games. This result puts pressure on the team as they prepare for consecutive games against direct competitors, including the Montreal Canadiens who are ahead in the Atlantic Division.

Players recognize that each game has a major impact on their postseason chances. “Every once in a while, you might take a peek, check on a few things, but I think in the big picture, we realize how tight our conference is, how tight our division is,” said forward Beck Malenstyn. “Every game is extremely important, and we’ve just got to keep putting our head down and collecting as many points as we can.”

Since early December when Buffalo was near the bottom of the Eastern Conference with an 11-14-4 record, they have improved significantly and now find themselves in playoff contention. The team has performed well at home with a record of 14-6-2 this season.

Forward Zach Benson commented on playing meaningful games late in the season: “It’s the games you want to run into, it’s the hockey you want to play, and it’s really what you dream of: playing competitive hockey every night and at the highest level.”

Wednesday’s game will also serve as Mental Health Awareness Night at KeyBank Center. The event aims to highlight mental health both within hockey and beyond. Amanda Edwards, Buffalo’s team sports psychologist, discussed her work with players as part of this initiative.

For fans wishing to watch or listen to Wednesday’s game, it will be televised locally on TNT and truTV and streamed via HBO Max. Radio coverage is available through WGR 550 and the Buffalo Sabres App.

In terms of lineup changes, Noah Ostlund returns after being scratched Monday. Josh Dunne is expected to miss four to six weeks due to a middle-body injury. Tyson Kozak will make his first appearance since December 18th by joining the fourth line; Jordan Greenway will sit out. Defenseman Bowen Byram missed Tuesday’s practice for personal reasons but is expected to play Wednesday. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen will start in goal.

This season Buffalo holds a record of three wins and one loss in nationally televised games and seeks its 25th win—an achievement not reached until March last year (2024–25). Defenseman Jacob Bryson set a career high with his second goal Monday; overall Sabres defensemen have contributed 27 goals so far this season—tied for sixth most league-wide. Ryan McLeod has registered thirteen points over fifteen games since December ninth. Goalie Luukkonen boasts seven wins out of eight starts at home along with strong save statistics.

The Flyers enter after two heavy losses against Tampa Bay (12 goals conceded over two games) but remain close to .500 since December (8-7-5). In prior meetings this season between these teams, each side won once: Philadelphia took a home victory while Buffalo claimed theirs at KeyBank Center later that month.

Flyers goalie Dan Vladar allowed four goals Monday for only the fifth time across twenty-seven appearances this year; he currently holds sixteen wins alongside solid averages but backup Samuel Ersson started both previous matchups versus Buffalo. Forward Trevor Zegras leads Philadelphia’s scoring despite recording just four points over his last eight contests.

Buffalo has prevailed over Philadelphia during their last three meetings at home but dropped three straight when visiting Philadelphia.
