The Buffalo Sabres’ eight-game winning streak ended with a 2-1 defeat against the Washington Capitals at KeyBank Center on March 13. The game remained tied for nearly 40 minutes before Capitals defenseman Jakob Chychrun scored the deciding goal with just over a minute left in regulation.

The result is significant as it halted Buffalo’s run of scoring two or more goals in 18 consecutive games and marked a rare setback for a team that has climbed to the top of the Atlantic Division in recent months. Despite registering 30 shots, the Sabres struggled to generate high-quality chances near the net, making things easier for Washington goaltender Charlie Lindgren, who made 29 saves.

“I still think we could’ve done a better job – we talked in between both periods – of getting somebody around the net front,” coach Lindy Ruff said. “There wasn’t a lot of opportunities there where we had somebody standing right on top of him.”

Buffalo’s lone goal came early from Sam Carrick, his second in four games since joining from the Rangers. The new fourth line featuring Carrick, Beck Malenstyn, and Tanner Pearson (in his Sabres debut) was effective during their time on ice, leading in shots and high-danger scoring chances. However, an offensive-zone turnover led to Washington tying the game early in the second period through Ryan Leonard.

“I think they just played the long game. They wanted us to make the mistakes,” said goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, who stopped 20 shots. Ruff agreed: “They played a real smart game. Realizing in the first period we were all over them, they stacked it up pretty good at the line.”

Tage Thompson reflected on Buffalo’s style: “I think our identity is playing fast, going north with the puck… when we had possession of it, we’d take it back a little too much and let them get into their set in the neutral zone. That just kind of slowed everyone up.”

Coach Ruff noted some players were not at their best: “I felt we had like four or five guys that weren’t really going that well… We could’ve turned some of the opportunities into better opportunities, but we didn’t.”

Despite this setback, Buffalo remains confident about rebounding quickly as they prepare to face Toronto next. “We’ve just got to regroup as a team here,” Thompson said. “The schedule’s so dense right now that we play every other day basically. So, really no time to hang your head on this one. Just keep moving forward.”

Injury updates included Alex Tuch missing Thursday’s game due to a minor lower-body injury sustained earlier in the week; coach Ruff indicated Tuch would likely have played if it were playoff season but was held out as a precaution.

Newcomers Tanner Pearson and Luke Schenn both made their debuts for Buffalo following recent trades; Pearson logged nearly nine minutes with three shots while Schenn contributed defensively with hits and blocked shots.
