The Buffalo Sabres secured a place in the Stanley Cup Playoffs after a Red Wings loss at Madison Square Garden, as announced on April 4. The team will play the Washington Capitals on Saturday at Capital One Arena.
This marks the end of a 14-year playoff drought for Buffalo. While making the playoffs is an achievement, the Sabres are aiming for more than just participation and hope to make a deep run in the postseason. With six regular season games left, they remain focused on improving their performance.
Thursday’s 4-1 defeat to Ottawa highlighted areas where Buffalo needs to improve, including generating high-danger scoring chances and adapting to tight defensive play. Alternate captain Mattias Samuelsson said, “Every game’s gonna be like this, and if we want to be able to do anything in the postseason, (we’re) gonna have to find ways to win different ways. And we definitely didn’t do that tonight.” Forward Jason Zucker added, “We need to shore up a lot of what we’re doing. I don’t think we have any panic in our room, but we have some stuff that we need to have a little bit more urgency towards.”
The upcoming match is important for both teams; while Buffalo looks ahead toward securing its position among Atlantic Division leaders Tampa Bay and Montreal, Washington remains three points out of a wild card spot after losing heavily in New Jersey. The Capitals previously defeated Buffalo last month with Jakob Chychrun scoring late in regulation.
For Saturday’s game broadcast information includes MSG network coverage beginning at 6:30 p.m., streaming via Gotham Sports App, and radio broadcasts on WGR 550 or through the Buffalo Sabres App. Goaltender Alex Lyon is expected to start after Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen played three consecutive games; Lyon has posted strong road performances recently.
As both teams push toward their postseason goals, all eyes will be on how they respond under pressure.
