The Buffalo Sabres and the Tampa Bay Lightning will face off at KeyBank Center on March 8, with both teams tied for first place in the Atlantic Division at 82 points. The winner of Sunday’s game will take sole possession of the division lead, at least temporarily, as the Lightning have two games in hand.
This matchup is significant because it could influence playoff positioning as the regular season nears its end. Both teams have performed strongly since December, with the Sabres posting a 27-5-2 record since their turnaround began on Dec. 9. They recently secured their sixth consecutive win at home against Nashville. The Lightning, meanwhile, are 23-7-2 over that same period and ended a four-game losing streak with a victory over Toronto.
Head coach Lindy Ruff said, “This is really what you would ask for. You want a team like that, you want to be able to play them. So, I’m looking forward to it.” Ruff also commented on the energy expected in this crucial contest: “I think we’re gonna have incredible energy. I mean, two teams get to play that are right next to each other in the standings. We had a heck of a game down there and you know they’re going to want to come back at us for the way that game ended up.”
The previous meetings between these teams were closely contested. On Feb. 3, Buffalo lost in overtime after giving up a late tying goal; on Feb. 28, they defeated Tampa Bay decisively after jumping out to an early lead and holding star Nikita Kucherov scoreless.
Goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen will start for Buffalo after making 152 saves on 162 shots in his last six appearances. Sam Carrick made his debut Saturday and contributed key faceoff wins late in the game against Nashville. Other recent acquisitions—Tanner Pearson, Luke Schenn, and Logan Stanley—are awaiting visa clearance and will not play Sunday.
Tage Thompson extended his point streak to ten games with a goal Saturday, marking the longest such streak by a Sabres player since Jeff Skinner in 2022. Thompson’s performance has been pivotal for Buffalo’s offense this season.
For Tampa Bay, Corey Perry scored in his return during Saturday’s win over Toronto and is expected to add physicality up front. With Andrei Vasilevskiy starting against Toronto, Jonas Johansson is likely to start in goal against Buffalo.
As both teams prepare for another critical meeting later this season on April 6, Sunday’s result could set the tone for their final push toward playoff seeding.
