The Buffalo Sabres and Boston Bruins will play Game 3 of their first-round playoff series on April 23 at TD Garden in Boston, with the series currently tied at one game each.
The matchup is significant as both teams look to gain an advantage in a closely contested series. The Sabres have shown strong offensive performances early in games throughout the season but struggled to break through against Boston’s defense and goaltender Jeremy Swayman in previous matches.
Bowen Byram said after scoring during Buffalo’s late push in Game 2, “The quicker we get to our game, obviously, the better we’re going to play. I don’t think we totally got there until the last 10 minutes or so again tonight. I think we had spurts, but we need a 60-minute effort to beat teams – always, but especially in the playoffs.”
Coach Lindy Ruff said he believes playing on the road could benefit his team. Since December 9, Buffalo has posted a league-best road record of 22-4-2. “There’s areas we’re going to have to get better at,” Ruff said, “but I don’t want to see one person doubting that we’re going to go to Boston and win a hockey game.”
Alex Lyon will start as goaltender for Game 3 after appearing in relief during Game 2. Forward Noah Ostlund returns for his first game since March 25 due to Josh Norris being out with an undisclosed injury. Tyson Kozak replaces Josh Dunne at fourth-line center.
Buffalo controlled over half of shot attempts at even strength through two games but faced challenges with faceoffs and special teams performance. Ruff commented on power play adjustments: “It’s gonna be a conversation in the coaches’ room, for sure.” Ostlund shared his excitement about making his playoff debut: “Very excited. It’s going to be a fun atmosphere. I’m very pumped to play tonight.” Ruff added about Ostlund: “He’s put together a nice year for us… He’s been a guy that I can rely on in all situations.” Byram also discussed dealing with Boston’s forecheck: “I don’t think we broke the puck out well tonight because of their forecheck… Playing defense is hard… Survive those moments, and then capitalize when you’ve got the momentum going the other way.”
Physicality increased during Game 2 with both teams accruing significant penalty minutes including misconducts and fighting majors. Zach Benson remarked on growing tensions: “I think every game you play, you hate each other more.”
Fans are invited to attend an official watch party for Game 3 at Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino featuring appearances from Sabretooth and Sabres alumni.
