Mercy Hospital in Buffalo has been recognized as a “High Performing Hospital” by U.S. News & World Report for its work in heart bypass surgery, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), pacemaker implantation, and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair. This is the highest rating that can be awarded for these procedures.

U.S. News & World Report evaluated more than 4,400 hospitals across the country in its 2025–2026 Best Hospitals report, reviewing performance in 15 specialties and 22 procedures and conditions. Only between 10% and 20% of hospitals received the “High Performing” distinction in any category.

The assessment process used by U.S. News relies mainly on objective data such as risk-adjusted mortality rates, complication rates, nursing care quality—including nurse-to-patient ratios and patient communication scores—and Medicare claims data. This year’s methodology placed up to three-quarters of the scoring emphasis on data-driven outcomes rather than reputation surveys. New this year were ratings for arrhythmia and pacemaker implantation; Mercy Hospital received recognition for pacemaker implantation during its first year being measured.

Derek S. Drake, DNP, MBA, President of Mercy Hospital of Buffalo said: “This honor is a testament to the extraordinary skill, dedication, and compassion of our entire Mercy Hospital team. Being named a High Performing Hospital demonstrates that our patients are receiving some of the highest-quality heart and vascular care available in the country. This recognition belongs to every clinician, every support staff member, and every person committed to our mission of healing.”

Drake also noted: “Our recognition in four major cardiac and vascular procedures reflects the strength of our comprehensive heart program. From our surgeons and cardiologists to our nurses, technologists, and every supporting service, this is truly a team achievement.”

In conjunction with American Heart Month in February, Mercy Hospital held an awards celebration on February 3 to recognize those involved with achieving this national distinction.

The rankings are produced by U.S. News with RTI International—a research organization based in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.
