Mayor Sean Ryan announced on April 6 the appointment of Erika Shields as the new Commissioner of the Buffalo Police Department. Shields is expected to take on her duties in May, pending confirmation by the Buffalo Common Council.
The selection follows a national search for a leader to guide the department through ongoing challenges. The mayor said Shields brings decades of experience managing large police departments and has demonstrated success in reducing violent crime and implementing data-driven policing strategies.
“Erika Shields is a proven leader with decades of experience guiding large departments through complex challenges,” Mayor Ryan said. “Her track record of reducing violent crime, getting illegal guns off the streets, and using data and technology to drive smarter policing aligns with our vision for a safer Buffalo. Just as importantly, she understands that building trust, investing in officers, and engaging the community are essential to achieving lasting public safety.”
Shields previously served as Chief of Police in Louisville and Atlanta. Her leadership roles included overseeing reforms, improving officer recruitment and retention, focusing on transparency and accountability, and promoting intelligence-led policing practices. She also worked with labor partners on officer wellness initiatives while supporting youth outreach programs.
“I am honored to have the opportunity to serve the City of Buffalo,” Shields said. “Public safety requires a holistic approach grounded in accountability, strong partnerships, and a commitment to doing the job the right way. That means supporting the men and women of the department while building trust through transparency and consistent engagement with the community. I look forward to working with officers and residents across Buffalo to create a safer city for everyone.”
If confirmed by city lawmakers next month, Shields will become responsible for leading efforts aimed at both crime reduction and strengthening ties between law enforcement officers and local residents.
