Max Donatelli, a former Sergeant in the United States Air Force, served from 1968 to 1972 as an aircraft mechanic during the Vietnam War. During his service, he also taught English to Vietnamese children on the base. He was awarded several honors, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Republic of Vietnam Service Medal.
After retiring from Baker Victory Services in 2016 following 42 years of service, Donatelli has been involved in various roles supporting high-risk youth and families. His career included positions as a direct care worker, clinician, director, and department head.
Donatelli is the former Executive Director of the Parent Network of Western New York and co-created Art of Advocacy, Inc., a not-for-profit organization. He serves as Secretary of the Erie County Community Services Board for Mental Hygiene and participates in multiple community organizations such as the Health Leadership Fellows Action Network and Developmental Disabilities Alliance of WNY Family Committee.
He is also involved with veterans’ services as a member of the Community Veterans Engagement Board of Western New York. Additionally, he founded and was the first Chair of the Erie County Anti-Stigma Coalition. Donatelli frequently writes articles and speaks on advocacy topics.
His contributions have earned him numerous awards including the NY Alliance for Inclusion and Innovation Community Advocacy Award and the National Federation of Just Communities “Lana Benatovich Lifetime Achievement Award.” A dedicated blood donor, he has contributed 26 gallons to date.
Holding degrees in Psychology and Sociology as well as a Master’s in Counselor Education from Canisius College, Donatelli lives in Hamburg, New York with his wife Joyce. They have two children; their son Craig has Down syndrome and works competitively while living semi-independently. The family advocates for developmental disabilities inclusion both locally and statewide.
