Lindy Ruff has led the Buffalo Sabres back to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2011, according to an April 11 announcement. After being dismissed by the New Jersey Devils in March 2024, Ruff returned to Buffalo and took over as head coach for the Sabres’ 2024-25 season.

Ruff’s return is significant for both him and the city of Buffalo, ending a playoff drought that lasted more than a decade. The coach said his connection with Buffalo never faded: “I say this – people might find it strange – but I’ve never really left. I’ve been here since 1979.” He emphasized his desire for current players to develop a similar bond with the city and its fans.

Players have noticed Ruff’s influence on team culture and performance. Alex Tuch said, “You see how much he cares about the crest and the City of Buffalo and how much it means to him, so for him to be the coach to get us out of the drought, I think means a lot for him and means a lot for our group.” Under Ruff’s leadership, key improvements include defensive play—moving from ranking near last in goals against per game last season into this year’s top ten—and overall team toughness.

Ruff’s coaching style balances discipline with support. Mattias Samuelsson described how video sessions set expectations: “He’ll come in and tell you he’s gonna share the morning coffee and then let a couple guys hear it…he definitely puts the group on notice about the standard around here.” Captain Rasmus Dahlin added that there are “no days off with him as coach.” Beyond hockey tactics, players also highlighted Ruff’s personal support during challenges such as family health issues.

The team’s turnaround has been marked by improved goal differential (from minus-20 last season to plus-44), stronger penalty killing (up from 76.3% to 81.7%), better results in division games, and franchise-best win totals since their record-setting years in mid-2000s history. As Zach Benson put it: “He’s awesome in video; when it needs to be serious, he’ll keep it serious, but he also knows how to keep the room light.”

Despite these achievements—including being considered for another Jack Adams Award—Ruff remains focused on immediate goals rather than long-term accolades: “We’re gonna stay with ‘just one more.’ Just win one more…not get too far ahead of ourselves.” The Sabres will now look ahead as they return KeyBank Center—and playoff hockey—to prominence.
