Former Buffalo Bills linebacker Jim Haslett has been named the Legend of the Game for the team’s upcoming matchup against Tampa Bay at Highmark Stadium. The game is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
“I’m excited, I’m excited to do it. I’m proud to be a part of it,” Haslett said. “I was proud to be on the teams that we were on … I’m just excited to get back.”
Haslett joined the Bills as a second-round draft pick in 1979 and played with the team until 1985. During his time in Buffalo, he accumulated 11 fumble recoveries, 7.5 sacks, seven forced fumbles, and five interceptions. He was recognized as NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in his first season.
After his playing career, which included one season with the New York Jets, Haslett began coaching as an assistant with the Oakland Raiders before joining the New Orleans Saints’ staff in 1995. He later served as defensive coordinator for both the Saints and Pittsburgh Steelers before returning to New Orleans as head coach in 2000. Under his leadership, the Saints won their first postseason game and he received NFL Coach of the Year honors that same year.
Haslett’s coaching career also included roles with Washington, Cincinnati Bengals, and Tennessee Titans before retiring from coaching after two seasons with Tennessee.
He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2001 and is one of only two Indiana University of Pennsylvania football players to have their jersey number retired.
Reflecting on his time with Buffalo, Haslett mentioned playing alongside Fred Smerlas and Shane Nelson, recalling their nickname “the Bermuda Triangle.” He also commented on this year’s team performance and quarterback Josh Allen’s impact: Haslett called Allen a standout player and expressed confidence that Buffalo will rebound from its recent loss to Miami.
On Sunday, Haslett will return to Highmark Stadium with his family for what he describes as a new experience—leading pregame festivities and watching his former team compete at home.
“I think they’re a really good football team,’ Haslett said. “… They got a bunch of good players and it’ll be fun to watch them play; but yeah, they’re a … well-coached football team, and it’ll be good to watch [on Sunday].”
