Senator Patrick M. Gallivan has announced that U.S. Air Force veteran Max Donatelli of Hamburg is being named to the New York State Senate Veterans’ Hall of Fame. Sergeant Donatelli, who served as an aircraft mechanic in Vietnam and taught English to Vietnamese children during his service from 1968 to 1972, earned several honors including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Republic of Vietnam Service Medal.
“Max Donatelli was a proud member of the United States Air Force and served our country with honor and distinction in Vietnam,” Senator Gallivan stated. “His commitment to service continues today through his work on behalf of individuals facing mental health challenges and their families. I thank Max for his ongoing service to our country and the Western New York community.”
Donatelli, along with his wife Joyce, has two children, Connie and Craig. The family advocates for individuals with developmental disabilities and mental health challenges both locally and statewide. He retired from Baker Victory Services in 2016 after a long career helping high-risk youth in foster care. Donatelli holds a BA degree in psychology and sociology and an MS degree in counselor education from Canisius College.
He previously served as executive director of the Parent Network of Western New York and co-created a not-for-profit called Art of Advocacy, Inc. His involvement extends to various organizations including the Erie County Community Services Board for Mental Hygiene, Health Leadership Fellows Action Network, Developmental Disabilities Alliance of WNY Family Committee, Hamburg Coalition of Equity and Inclusion, Leadership Buffalo, Community Veterans Engagement Board of Western New York, Erie County Anti-Stigma Coalition.
Donatelli is recognized for writing articles on advocacy topics and speaking publicly on related issues. His awards include the NY Alliance for Inclusion and Innovation’s “Community Advocacy Award” and the National Federation of Just Communities’ “Lana Benatovich Lifetime Achievement Award.” Additionally, he is noted as a 26-gallon Red Cross blood donor.
The New York State Senate Veterans’ Hall of Fame recognizes veterans who have distinguished themselves both militarily and civically. Honorees are featured in an online exhibit showcasing their contributions.
A ceremony celebrating this year’s inductees took place on May 27 at the Capitol in Albany.
