FOIA Request to University At Buffalo regarding Chinese National students on June 16, 2025.

The Buffalo Ledger, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive news coverage on local governmental affairs, has submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the University at Buffalo. The request, sent on June 16, 2025, seeks detailed information concerning Chinese National students enrolled at the university.

The request is structured into four main parts. Firstly, it asks for documents or lists showing all current students who are Chinese Nationals and their respective departments of study. If this information is protected, the requester asks for the total number of such students and a breakdown by department.

Secondly, the request seeks documents detailing any scholarships received by these students, including the amount and source of each scholarship. Thirdly, it requests a list of recipients affiliated with the Chinese Scholarship Council if not already covered in the previous inquiry.

Lastly, the FOIA request asks for any policies or procedures that describe how the university monitors its students—including Chinese Nationals—to protect intellectual property and other confidential information.

This request is made on behalf of The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy and highlights its role in holding public institutions accountable through transparency. The requester also seeks a fee waiver due to their position as a media professional involved in disseminating public information.

We look forward to receiving this information in an electronic format as it will greatly aid in our reporting efforts. As always, we remain open for any questions or clarifications regarding this request.
