FOIA Request to SUNY Buffalo State University regarding recent course syllabi on August 6, 2025.

A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was submitted by the Buffalo Ledger to SUNY Buffalo State University seeking access to a comprehensive list of course syllabi for all undergraduate and graduate courses offered during the Spring 2025 academic semester. The request encompasses syllabi from all departments, schools, and colleges within the university, regardless of whether the courses were conducted in-person, online, or through hybrid formats.

The request specifically asks for additional metadata associated with each syllabus. This includes details such as the course title and number, instructor name, department or academic unit responsible for the course, and the delivery format of each course. The intention behind this request is to provide transparency and hold public institutions accountable by ensuring that information about educational offerings is accessible to the public.

As a media organization dedicated to reporting on local governmental affairs, Buffalo Ledger has requested this information under the New York Freedom of Information Law. The organization has also sought a fee waiver citing its role in disseminating information to the public. The requestor is affiliated with The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, a non-profit corporation that assists media companies and advocacy groups in investigating government actions using FOIA and Sunshine Laws.

We look forward to receiving this information in an electronic format as it will greatly aid in our reporting efforts. As always, we remain open for any questions or clarifications regarding this request.
