Erie County Sheriff John C. Garcia announced on Mar. 16 that the Erie County Sheriff’s Office finished the 2025 fiscal year with revenues and savings exceeding expectations.

The announcement is significant as it highlights both increased revenue and cost-saving measures within the department, which impacts county taxpayers and public safety funding.

According to Garcia, total revenues for the year reached approximately $6.9 million, surpassing projections by $2.3 million. A major factor in this overperformance was a $1.9 million payment from the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS). This payment was related to a backlog of incarcerated individuals who could not be transferred to state custody due to a state prison strike. DOCCS reimburses counties $100 per day for each individual held more than ten days after becoming eligible for transfer.

Despite extra costs associated with holding these individuals longer, expenses in both the Jail Management Division and Correctional Health Division were $8.5 million under budget. Across all divisions, consumable budget expenses came in $4.9 million below what had been allocated.

“We all want to live and work in safe neighborhoods. This priority requires investment in our law enforcement,” said Sheriff Garcia. “At the Erie County Sheriff’s Office, our top priority is to provide quality public safety services. That being said, I take very seriously my expectation to be responsible with our county tax dollars. Each penny we spent in 2025 went toward fulfilling our mission. We are continuing this effort in 2026.”

The report suggests that despite challenges such as forced overtime shifts for staff due to an inflated jail census, the office managed its resources efficiently throughout the year.
