Rasmus Dahlin achieved his first NHL hat trick and recorded five points in the Buffalo Sabres’ 7-4 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena on Tuesday. The Sabres captain’s performance contributed to the team’s fourth consecutive win, marking a 19-3-1 record since December 9, which is the best 23-game stretch in franchise history.
Sabres coach Lindy Ruff commented on Dahlin’s achievement, saying, “He said, ‘I don’t even know how to act because I’ve never done this before.’ We know there’s a lot of hockey left, but I’m happy for him.” Ruff also added, “The young man’s gone through a lot, and I’m so happy for him that he’s getting rewarded for all the work and all the adversity that he’s faced. This has got to put a big smile on Carolina’s face, too.”
Dahlin and teammate Tage Thompson both reached career milestones during the game. Dahlin registered his 400th point while Thompson scored in his 500th NHL game. Since joining the team together in 2018, both players have spoken about their commitment to building a winning culture in Buffalo.
Buffalo now sits third in the Atlantic Division with a six-point lead over Florida, the closest non-playoff team, and is eight points ahead of Toronto after Tuesday’s result.
The game featured multiple momentum shifts. The Sabres had an early goal overturned due to an offside challenge and lost starting goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen to a lower-body injury early in the first period. Colten Ellis replaced Luukkonen and made 16 saves while conceding two goals.
Mattias Samuelsson described Dahlin as “just an impressive human being,” while Thompson highlighted Dahlin’s perseverance amid personal challenges: “Obviously what he’s going through personally, I can’t even imagine. The fact that he’s here playing hockey and competing for us means the world to us and I think that just speaks to his character. How much he loves the team, how much he wants to win. And he’s not just playing, he’s leading by example. I can’t say enough good things about him and obviously the mental strength you have to have to be able to do what he’s doing is pretty impressive.”
Dahlin credited his teammates after the game: “I’m just so happy I can be with this team, my brothers. They help me every day. I could not have done this without them, that’s for sure.”
Samuelsson recorded three assists during the match—his second three-point game of the season—but noted Dahlin’s standout performance: “But Ras had to steal the show with five,” Samuelsson said. “Yeah, it’s fun to be involved in the game on both sides of the ice.”
The Sabres outshot Toronto 31-23 and took control with disciplined play as odd bounces marked a back-and-forth opening half before pulling away late.
Looking ahead, Buffalo will host the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday during its annual Black History Celebration featuring local Black artists, entrepreneurs and entertainers.
Coverage will begin at 6:30 p.m., with puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m.
