Buffalo, NY – Catholic Health has launched LIFE D’Youville, a new initiative aimed at helping seniors live independently at home. This program offers an alternative to traditional nursing home care by providing comprehensive medical and support services. Located on the D’Youville University campus in Buffalo’s West Side, the center is part of Catholic Health’s expansion of its LIFE (Living Independently for Elders) program.
The LIFE program has been addressing long-term care needs in Erie County for over 15 years, initially at the OLV Senior Neighborhood in Lackawanna and later at LIFE Villa on the Villa Maria Campus in Cheektowaga. The new facility is designed for residents aged 55 or older who qualify for nursing home care but can remain safely at home with assistance from the program.
“LIFE D’Youville offers an alternative to nursing home care for many elderly individuals and their families,” stated John Beyer, President & CEO of Catholic Health LIFE. “Our mission is to keep seniors in their own homes for as long as possible, ensuring they receive the medical care and support services needed to live safely and independently.”
The $3.2 million project has been under development for a year. The opening ceremony was attended by leaders from Catholic Health, the LIFE/PACE Program, D’Youville University, and the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation.
Joyce Markiewicz, President & CEO of Catholic Health, expressed gratitude towards the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation: “I would like to thank the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation, who was the principal champion for this project. Without their generous support, this new LIFE Center would not have been possible.”
University President Lorrie Clemo commented on hosting the program: “D’Youville University is delighted to welcome the Catholic Health LIFE program to our city campus. This new day center aligns perfectly with our mission of service and commitment to the community.”
Participants at LIFE D’Youville receive various on-site services such as social activities, personal care, therapeutic recreation, social work support, and meals. Additional healthcare services are available at other Catholic Health LIFE centers.
“As our population continues to age, the demand for programs and services to support seniors continues to grow,” added Markiewicz. She noted that Erie County was first introduced to the PACE care model by their health system.
LIFE D’Youville is open to Erie County residents aged 55 or older who meet certain criteria. The program is covered by Medicare and/or Medicaid with private-pay options available.
