C.J. Gardner-Johnson signed a one-year contract with the Buffalo Bills on March 13, expressing his enthusiasm to bring energy and experience to the team’s defense under new defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard.
Gardner-Johnson said he wants to add excitement to the defense, noting that while offense often gets attention, “the defense, give a little spark to it.” His move comes as the Bills look for renewed strength in their lineup following recent coaching changes.
The safety was drafted by New Orleans in 2019 and has since played for several teams including Philadelphia, Detroit, Houston, and Chicago. He highlighted connections within the Bills organization from his time with Saints head coach Sean Payton and offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael. “They know me… [head coach Joe Brady] was familiar with my face and my game,” Gardner-Johnson said about why Buffalo felt like a good fit.
After winning Super Bowl LIX with Philadelphia in 2024 and splitting his 2025 season between Houston and Chicago, Gardner-Johnson brings both championship experience and versatility. Last season he recorded notable statistics including multiple tackles for loss, sacks, interceptions, and forced fumbles across different teams.
Gardner-Johnson emphasized leadership by example through productivity on the field: “Productivity speaks for itself… just getting in and learning the playbook as fast as you can to continue to be a high productive player … [is] the best thing you could do.” He also expressed eagerness about working alongside younger teammates like Cole Bishop: “It’s going to be great. I feel [like it’s] going to be a great duo … just feeding off each other… take the ball away and play aggressive.” On quarterback Josh Allen’s impact he said: “We got a two-headed monster that can really go at you… actually win the game for our team.”
Looking ahead, Gardner-Johnson is focused on adapting wherever needed within Buffalo’s scheme: “Open mind … wherever coach put me up, I’m playing ball.” He concluded simply: “Focus on ball. Because that’s what Buffalo is.”
