The Buffalo Sabres have announced the re-signing of defenseman Bowen Byram to a two-year contract. The deal, which has an average annual value of $6.25 million, secures Byram’s place on the team through the 2026-27 season.
Byram, who is 24 years old, played in all 82 games for the Sabres during the 2024-25 season. He achieved career highs in several categories including average time on ice at 22:42 minutes per game, assists with 31, points totaling 38, a plus-minus rating of +11, and shot blocks with a count of 116.
Standing at six feet one inch tall, Byram contributed significantly in various situations. He ranked third among Buffalo defensemen for shorthanded ice time at 1:52 minutes per game and power-play ice time at 0:56 minutes per game. During five-on-five play, the Sabres outscored their opponents by a margin of 80-66 when Byram was on the ice. Notably, he formed an effective partnership with Rasmus Dahlin; together they helped Buffalo outscore their competition by a wide margin of 35-15 during shared five-on-five ice time.
Byram hails from Cranbrook, British Columbia and was initially drafted fourth overall by the Colorado Avalanche in 2019. He spent parts of four seasons with Colorado and participated in 27 playoff games between 2022 and 2023. In Colorado’s Stanley Cup-winning run in 2022, Byram recorded nine assists and achieved a league-best plus-15 rating.
The Sabres acquired Byram from the Avalanche on March 6, 2024. Since joining Buffalo, he has accumulated a total of 47 points (10 goals and 37 assists) along with a plus-10 rating over the course of 100 games. Throughout his regular-season career so far, Byram has amassed a total of 110 points (33 goals and 77 assists) across his participation in 246 games.
