The result marks the second straight overtime loss for Buffalo. The game was closely contested, with both teams exchanging leads throughout regulation and into extra time.
Zach Benson extended his point streak to four games by scoring in the third period, while Tage Thompson contributed two assists. Goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 27 saves during the game. The Sabres briefly led after scoring twice within a span of 33 seconds in the third period, but Casey Mittelstadt tied it up for Boston with six minutes left before Zacha scored early in overtime.
Conor Timmins returned to play for Buffalo after recovering from a broken leg suffered on December 18. He logged over fifteen minutes of ice time and contributed two blocked shots and two hits.
Despite this loss, Buffalo holds a record of 44 wins, 20 losses, and eight overtime losses with a total of 96 points. They lead the Tampa Bay Lightning by three points atop the Atlantic Division and are tied with Carolina Hurricanes for first place in the Eastern Conference. The team has earned at least one point in twenty-one out of their last twenty-four games.
The Sabres will continue their homestand against Detroit on Friday.
