The Buffalo Sabres lost 6-2 to the Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena on April 5, hours after securing their first playoff berth since 2011 due to the Detroit Red Wings’ loss to the New York Rangers.
This game marks a significant moment for the Sabres, who have ended a long postseason drought. Despite this achievement, they dropped consecutive games in regulation for the first time since early December and are now tied for second place in the Atlantic Division with the Montreal Canadiens.
Washington took control early in the game, scoring three goals within just under three minutes by Jakob Chychrun, Dylan Strome, and Connor McMichael. This prompted Buffalo to replace goaltender Alex Lyon with Colten Ellis. Ellis made his first appearance since February and stopped 17 of 19 shots during his time on ice.
Rasmus Dahlin and Beck Malenstyn scored first-period goals for Buffalo but were unable to close the gap further against Capitals goaltender Logan Thompson. The Sabres generated a total of 39 shots and had five power plays but could not convert those opportunities into more goals.
Buffalo has five regular-season games remaining as they prepare for an important matchup against Tampa Bay Lightning at home on Monday.
