The Buffalo Sabres defeated the San Jose Sharks 5-0 at SAP Center on March 20, with Alex Lyon recording a shutout and achieving his tenth consecutive road win. Lyon became the fifth goalie in National Hockey League history to win ten straight road games, joining Evgeni Nabokov, Devan Dubnyk, Carey Price, and Kevin Lankinen. The league record for consecutive road wins is eleven, held by Nabokov and Dubnyk.
The Sabres extended their franchise-record road point streak to twelve games (11-0-1) and have won eleven of twelve games since the Olympic break. With this victory, they are tied with the Carolina Hurricanes atop the Eastern Conference standings with ninety-two points.
Buffalo’s recent success has been supported by its goaltending tandem of Lyon and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, who have alternated starts since the break. Luukkonen posted a 28-save shutout in the team’s previous game against Vegas. In Thursday’s game, Lyon made twenty-three saves to secure his shutout as Buffalo broke a scoreless tie midway through the second period. The team scored three goals within one minute and forty-three seconds during that period from Noah Ostlund, Sam Carrick, and Rasmus Dahlin.
Tage Thompson added his thirty-fifth goal of the season early in the third period, marking Buffalo’s fourth goal on four consecutive shots. Logan Stanley contributed two assists for his first points as a member of the Sabres. Alex Tuch returned to play after missing one game due to illness.
The Sabres will continue their road trip Saturday in Los Angeles. Coverage will begin at 3:30 p.m., with puck drop scheduled for 4.
