Alex Lyon recorded his second shutout of the season and matched a franchise record with his ninth consecutive win as the Buffalo Sabres defeated the New York Islanders 5-0 at UBS Arena on Saturday.
Lyon’s nine straight victories equal the Sabres’ franchise mark set by Gerry Desjardins in December 1976. His current streak began with an overtime win in Edmonton on December 9, which also marked the start of a 10-game winning run for the team.
After missing three weeks between his seventh and eighth wins due to an upper-body injury sustained late in a game against St. Louis on December 29, Lyon returned to action with a 31-save performance in Nashville earlier this week.
During Saturday’s game, Lyon made several important saves while Buffalo held a narrow lead in the second period. These included stopping Islanders leading scorer Mathew Barzal on a shorthanded breakaway and making another save against Max Shabanov shortly after.
Jason Zucker scored twice for Buffalo, once early in both the second and third periods. Tage Thompson, Rasmus Dahlin, and Alex Tuch also contributed goals. Ryan McLeod and Mattias Samuelsson each registered two assists.
The victory moved Buffalo into third place in the Atlantic Division through a tiebreaker over Montreal, pending other results later that night.
