The Buffalo Sabres secured a playoff berth on April 5, ending a 14-year drought, despite losing 6-2 to the Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena. The team clinched their spot after Detroit lost earlier in the day.
The return to the playoffs is significant for both the organization and its supporters, as it marks a turnaround from being in last place just four months ago. “Obviously unbelievable,” captain Rasmus Dahlin said. “I’m happy for the city. I’m happy for all the guys that have been grinding here for years: the equipment managers, the trainers, my teammates. Most of [all], the people in the city. Wow, it’s gonna be special, that’s for sure.” Alex Tuch added: “Really proud of the group. It’s been a long time coming – it’s my fifth year here – and I was a pretty happy guy this afternoon.”
Despite this achievement, players expressed concern about recent performance issues as they dropped to third place in their division following consecutive regulation losses—a first since early December—and are currently on a 2-3-2 skid. Tage Thompson said: “It’s not good enough to just get in; there’s other teams that are doing that every year… We want to do something special, and if we’re playing like that, we’re not going to.” Coach Lindy Ruff made an early goalie change after defensive breakdowns led to three quick goals by Washington.
Dahlin scored soon after Ellis replaced Lyon in goal but acknowledged mistakes: “You try to force stuff when you’re trying to come back in games… It’s never a good thing to be down three that early.” Tuch commented on goaltending support: “We left both our goalies hanging out to dry today… They didn’t deserve that. They’ve been battling for us all year.” Ruff emphasized defensive commitment: “We’ve taken a lot of pride; our defensive play has been a big reason why we’ve got to where we got… We can’t take that for granted.” Dahlin agreed: “When we were successful, it was a grind… We sacrificed our bodies. We’ve got to get back to that.”
Special teams struggled with no power-play goals on five opportunities and allowing one shorthanded tally by Washington. Thompson reflected on missed chances during man advantages: “The power play there was an opportunity… I just thought that we were frustrated… you don’t make the right plays… you start to force things.”
Looking ahead, Buffalo will face Tampa Bay at home with hopes of regaining momentum before starting their postseason run. Ruff said about Monday’s upcoming game: “There was a lot of intensity last time, and maybe it’s exactly what we need right now.”
