The Buffalo Sabres announced on Mar. 6 the acquisition of four new players as the National Hockey League trade deadline passed, aiming to strengthen their roster for a potential playoff run.
The team added defensemen Logan Stanley and Luke Schenn from the Winnipeg Jets, forward Sam Carrick from the New York Rangers, and forward Tanner Pearson in a second deal with Winnipeg just before the deadline. In exchange, the Sabres sent out defenseman Jacob Bryson, forward Isak Rosen, and several draft picks over the next two years.
General manager Jarmo Kekäläinen said these moves were made to reward the team’s performance so far this season. “With their play, with their work ethic, with their compete, they’ve earned all the help we can give them as management,” Kekäläinen said. “I think we tried our best to do that, and I think we accomplished a lot of things.”
Kekäläinen emphasized the importance of depth as the team faces its final 20 games in 40 days and prepares for a busy playoff schedule. “Players are going to get banged up, and it’s very, very important in my mind to have depth,” he said. He also highlighted how Stanley and Schenn’s size will complement Buffalo’s existing blue line: “We have a lot of skill on our defense… so I think we can really use the defensive side of things with the big two ‘trees’ that we got in these trades.”
Addressing reports about possible trades with St. Louis involving Robert Thomas or Colton Parayko—who reportedly used his no-trade clause—Kekäläinen declined to comment on specifics but spoke positively about Buffalo as a destination for players: “It’s disappointing to see somebody thinking it’s got something to do with the City of Buffalo… We have a great hockey team that’s winning games and a fun atmosphere… I would think that our players are loving it here.”
The Sabres chose not to trade alternate captain Alex Tuch despite his pending free agency status. Kekäläinen said: “I told his agent that we’re not going to make our team weaker… So, now we’re going to continue those talks and hopefully get a deal done before July 1.”
On injuries, forward Jiri Kulich continues non-contact skating after being sidelined since November due to a blood clot but is unlikely to return this season. Jordan Greenway and Justin Danforth are also recovering from injuries without clear timelines for return.
As Buffalo looks ahead to its remaining games and potential postseason appearance, Kekäläinen expressed optimism about both recent additions and ongoing contract negotiations.
