The Buffalo Bills announced on Mar. 12 that they have signed quarterback Kyle Allen to a two-year contract.
Allen returns to Buffalo after previously serving as backup to Josh Allen in the 2023 season, during which he appeared in seven games for the team. His signing marks the second addition to the Bills’ quarterback roster this offseason, following the re-signing of Shane Buechele to a one-year deal on Feb. 11.
Most recently, Allen played for the Detroit Lions in the 2025 season, where he secured the backup role over Hendon Hooker and made three appearances behind starting quarterback Jared Goff. In 2024, he was with the Pittsburgh Steelers on a one-year contract and played in one game as a third-string quarterback behind Justin Fields and Russell Wilson.
Allen’s career also includes time with Houston, Washington, and Carolina. With the Texans, he started both games he played, completing 59 percent of his passes for 416 yards and two touchdowns. As a member of Washington’s Commanders from 2020-21, Allen played six games with four starts and finished those seasons with a completion percentage of nearly 68 percent.
Allen began his professional career as an undrafted free agent signed by Carolina in 2018 after playing college football at Houston and Texas A&M. During his tenure with the Panthers from 2018-19, he appeared in 15 games with 13 starts, throwing for more than 3,500 yards and tallying 19 touchdowns.
