The Buffalo Bills’ second day of training camp at St. John Fisher University was marked by high temperatures and strong performances from both offense and defense. James Cook, the team’s running back, made headlines with a standout play during practice, catching a swing pass and running 50 yards for what would have been a touchdown. Fullback Reggie Gilliam contributed significantly with a crucial block on the play.
Cook, who is currently in contract negotiations, expressed his commitment to the team and his desire to remain in Buffalo long-term. “It’s my job,” Cook said about participating in training camp amidst ongoing talks. “I’ve got to participate so I won’t get fined.” General Manager Brandon Beane also shared his hopes of keeping Cook with the team while considering salary cap constraints.
Joe Brady, offensive coordinator for the Bills, emphasized the advantage of having several returning players as they prepare for the upcoming season. “It gives you an opportunity right now to continue to grow their game,” Brady noted regarding the returners. The offense saw significant success last season under Brady’s guidance, scoring a franchise-record 525 points.
During Thursday’s practice, the offense showed consistency outside of the red zone, with notable contributions from running backs Ty Johnson and wide receiver Keon Coleman. On defense, new additions Michael Hoecht and Shaq Thompson stood out with impressive plays throughout practice.
Several players did not finish or participate in Thursday’s practice due to injuries, including linebacker Dorian Williams and tight end Dawson Knox.
