Buffalo returned from its bye week with a decisive 40-9 victory over Carolina on Sunday, showing strong performances from both offense and defense.
Running back James Cook III achieved a career milestone by rushing for more than 200 yards in a single game for the first time. He also set several personal and NFL records during the matchup. Wide receiver Khalil Shakir and quarterback Josh Allen contributed three combined touchdowns. However, team members emphasized that the win was due to contributions across the roster.
Elijah Moore, wide receiver, and Jackson Hawes, tight end, made significant blocks that allowed scorers to succeed. On one key play in the second half, Christian Rozeboom of Carolina tried to stop Shakir’s run downfield, but Moore blocked Rozeboom out of the way. This move enabled Shakir to score a 54-yard touchdown.
“If you go back and watch that play, [Moore], he was coming from the other side, making a really key block, allowing [Shakir] to spring free and that’s the effort. It’s not going to get talked about in the box score, but … Moore, makes that play there,” said Josh Allen after the game. “I’ve got to be better for [Moore]. I missed him on a deep out earlier in the game, but for him to not care about that, to put his head down, go make an extra block for a guy, speaks a lot about the character that he has.”
Jackson Hawes played an important role as well by blocking defenders during Cook’s first rushing touchdown of 64 yards. Hawes continued this support throughout the game by opening up running lanes and providing opportunities for extra yardage.
“I want to thank my O-line,” Cook said after the game. “Without them, I couldn’t run. Just thank them guys for always having my back and [opening] up lanes for the run.”
Hawes made another crucial block at the end of the first quarter which helped Cook gain 24 yards—this drive led Buffalo close enough for a field goal attempt at the start of the second quarter.
“Cook, another big day. Doesn’t happen without wide receivers, tight ends blocking down the field,” head coach Sean McDermott stated postgame. “Want to make sure I mention that and praise that part of our effort.”
On defense, players filled roles as needed due to changes in lineup decisions related to health precautions. Linebacker Terrel Bernard was dressed but did not play; Shaq Thompson and Dorian Williams stepped into his position.
Thompson played a key role early in setting up an interception by defensive end A.J. Epenesa when he anticipated Carolina quarterback Andy Dalton’s call before shifting Buffalo’s defense accordingly.
Rookie cornerback Maxwell Hairston debuted after being closely monitored throughout practice during the week.
“Just wanting to be patient, and it’s hard when you want him out there. But we owe that to the person, to the player, and I thought he came in today and did some good things,” McDermott said regarding Hairston’s debut.
Hairston made an impact tackle against Jimmy Horn along Buffalo’s sideline during a critical moment when Buffalo led by nine points; this limited Horn’s advance significantly.
“The process and the preparation piece had to be where it needed to be. And players did a phenomenal job. As I said, the coaches, the leadership group, phenomenal job getting out in front of our team and leading,” McDermott added postgame. “… Different attitude, different energy, finishing plays. Really was more how in terms of how we do things … good team effort.”
