The Buffalo Bills have announced the return of their iconic red helmets, which will be worn in Week 18 against the Jets. This decision comes as a tribute to the team’s history and as part of a farewell to Highmark Stadium, where this will be the last season.
Pete Guelli, Chief Operating Officer of the Bills, explained on “A New Morning” on WBEN Radio that there was significant interest from both within the organization and among fans to bring back these throwback elements. “It’s something we knew we wanted to do,” he stated.
Players expressed surprise and excitement about the announcement. Wide receiver Khalil Shakir initially thought it was a prank by the social media team but became excited once he realized it was genuine. He believes that wearing different uniforms can boost players’ confidence: “If you look good, you feel good, you play good.”
Running back Ray Davis admitted he was unaware of the team’s history with red helmets until recently but described them as “pretty fire.” Defensive end AJ Epenesa is eager to see them in person after only viewing videos and pictures so far.
The red helmets are associated with a successful era for the Bills when they won four consecutive AFC Championships under coach Marv Levy. The period featured legendary players like Bruce Smith, Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas, and Andre Reed. Epenesa noted that bringing back such an emblematic piece is touching for former players and serves as inspiration for current ones.
Quarterback Josh Allen simply remarked about the helmets: “They’re great.”
