The Buffalo Bandits announced on Apr. 24 that they have secured a playoff spot for the sixth consecutive season after overcoming a challenging stretch in their 2025-26 campaign. The turnaround followed a difficult period marked by injuries, roster changes, and a four-game losing streak that left the team with a 4-6 record.

This development is significant as it highlights the resilience of the Bandits despite losing key players to free agency and retirement, raising questions about whether their championship run could continue. The team’s ability to regroup has kept their hopes alive for another title.

Head coach John Tavares said morale was low after several losses but credited a pivotal team meeting for changing the team’s approach: “When we were 4-6 we had a team meeting and guys made a commitment to treating every game like it’s a playoff game,” Tavares said. “And just be very gritty and stingy and make the other teams earn everything that they get.”

Dhane Smith, who achieved his ninth career 100-point season, pointed to close contests against top teams as turning points: “I feel like our turning point was the Vancouver game even though we lost,” Smith said. He added that competing closely with strong opponents restored confidence in the group.

Josh Byrne highlighted personal sacrifices made by veteran players returning for another run at success: “You may not understand how big of a commitment that is when you’re 35-plus and (have) kids and a family… At the end of the day, you got to fight for them in what they’re giving up, and I’m just proud of our guys.”

General manager Steve Dietrich said back-to-back wins against Saskatchewan Rush and Toronto Rock convinced him not to break up the roster: “Those two wins showed that , on top of the character in our room, we still have that championship mentality…” Dietrich later made moves at the trade deadline to strengthen depth.

The Bandits went on to win seven straight games, clinching their postseason berth with strong performances from returning veterans as well as new additions. The prospect of this being one last playoff run for some core players served as further motivation throughout their resurgence.

As several veterans consider retirement or departure after this season, Byrne reflected on what is driving this year’s effort: “There’s some guys on this team that this will be their last season…we got to do what’s best for the group.”
