The Buffalo Bandits recorded their fifth straight victory on March 30, defeating the Saskatchewan Rush in a game that marked the team’s 500th regular season appearance. Players and coaches said the recent winning streak has boosted team confidence as they move closer to securing a spot in the postseason.
The Bandits’ continued success is significant as it brings them closer to achieving a favorable playoff position. The team’s ability to come from behind and win games demonstrates resilience, according to players and staff.
Ian MacKay, who contributed on both offense and defense during the game, said, “We’ve never lacked the confidence; it’s just continuing to grow and get better as we are stringing together some wins, finding ways to win instead of finding ways to lose. If anything, it’s a boost to our confidence the last couple of games.” Head coach John Tavares echoed this sentiment: “I like the swagger that is happening right now; we have that confidence back again. When you have that swagger, you think you can win any game, you’re never out of it… It’s nice to see the guys have that swagger.”
Goaltender Matt Vinc played a key role with 44 saves—26 coming in the second half—and finished with a .928 save percentage. His performance limited Saskatchewan’s scoring opportunities in crucial moments of the match.
MacKay emphasized that while their playoff prospects look strong, nothing is certain yet: “We are in a pretty good position for the playoffs, but nothing is guaranteed yet… If we continue to win games going into the playoffs, hopefully we get a better seed.” Nine different Bandits contributed offensively during this milestone game for Buffalo’s franchise history.
Tavares reflected on his coaching approach after transitioning from his long playing career: “I don’t look at our record; I just look at how we’re doing; is this working for us defensively? We continue… Each game is a little bit different with each opponent, and we adjust accordingly.” The team aims to maintain its momentum as they prepare for upcoming challenges.
