Less than a day after their overtime loss to the Denver Broncos in the Divisional Round, Buffalo Bills players returned to One Bills Drive for exit meetings and to clear out their lockers. The team reflected on the season’s end, the controversial moments of their final game, and the unique bond shared within this year’s roster.

During Saturday’s game, Buffalo overcame a 13-point deficit in the third quarter, scoring 20 points to force overtime. The defense contributed with key plays, including an interception and two forced punts. A 50-yard field goal tied the game as regulation expired.

In overtime, a pivotal moment came when quarterback Josh Allen threw deep to wide receiver Brandin Cooks on 3rd & 11. Cooks appeared to secure the catch at Denver’s 20-yard line before his knee hit the ground. However, officials ruled it an interception by Broncos defensive back Ja’Quan McMillian. Lead referee Carl Cheffers explained in a pool report that Cooks lost possession when he hit the ground and that McMillian completed the catch.

“I definitely thought I caught it,” said Cooks. “I think it’s one of those things that you’ve seen examples of throughout the league this year, over the years. Definitely thought it was a catch. Knee was definitely down and had possession. But I’m not the one to make excuses.

“I think, at the end of the day, for me, the way I think about it is just got to find a way to not put it in the ref’s hand … Unfortunately, didn’t get the call to go our way.”

Linebacker Shaq Thompson echoed Cooks’ sentiments about missed opportunities: “A lot of emotions, a lot of anger, frustration, and rightfully so,” Thompson said. “But I mean, there’s multiple ways to look at this. You can look at the catch as a catch ruled down by contact. And there’s multiple plays that we left out there that we didn’t have to put in the hands of the refs.”

Tight end Dawson Knox expressed disappointment with how officials handled replay review: “It felt like it kind of just got glazed over,” Knox said regarding officiating on Cooks’ play. “Even though they probably did review it plenty, it didn’t feel like to us that it was kind of looked at intentionally…a critical moment like that seemed to just have been a call that they stuck with and then moved on to the next play.”

Defensive end Greg Rousseau addressed coping with defeat: “It’s hard losing games like that, overtime games in playoffs,” Rousseau shared. “…We’re a really good team…It’s tough to fall short like that but…You can’t let one moment in life; a loss or win define you.”

Josh Allen took responsibility for Buffalo’s defeat after Saturday’s contest but received strong support from teammates who credited him for keeping them competitive against one of league’s top defenses.

“The type of leader he is…he’s always going try put all on his shoulders,” Knox said about Allen. “…Just trying pick him up let him know we put up 30 points on arguably best defense NFL…he gave us every chance win possible.”

Veterans encouraged younger teammates not be defined by one loss or missed opportunity.

“Just keep your heads up. It’s part NFL,” Thompson advised rookies Sunday afternoon.”… It’s hard win this league…You have learn from every loss…”

Rookie defensive tackle Deone Walker described guidance from veterans: “‘Hey it’s going be okay,’ …Take it one day time.Focus getting your body better, get mental better, everything better next season.”

Knox added motivation would come from remembering this playoff defeat: “I think it’s important hold those feelings remember what feels like because that’s some best motivation moving forward,” he said.”Hopefully one these years,we’ll able get over hump.”

Players also highlighted resilience as key theme throughout injury-plagued season—a quality built through adversity since Week 1 against Baltimore Ravens.

“I would characterize our team as resilient…No matter what…let’s play,” Walker said.”We trust especially defensive side ball, next man up going make play…”

Fullback Reggie Gilliam noted persistence even amid doubt during difficult games:”We didn’t blink at all,” he recalled.

Kicker Tyler Bass spoke about supporting teammates while sidelined:”I was biggest cheerleader Bills.Supporting guys…it’s hard watch when you’re not out there doing after doing while, but all could do cheer guys be there anyway could.”

Thompson praised collective preparation across entire organization:”Resiliency.Next man up mentality.Everybody has mindset if they’re starter…”

Quarterback Mitchell Trubisky called relationships formed within locker room lasting:”I love this team,I love these guys…I love city…Great relationships will last rest my life, sure…”

Wide receiver Curtis Samuel commented on camaraderie:”This is close group.Just brotherhood friendships people have here truly amazing.I think goes beyond just inside locker room…”

Beyond football, the players recognized support from community—especially following playoff elimination.Guard O’Cyrus Torrence described returning home early morning greeted by cheering fans despite loss:“That definitely something made my night…fans are out there cold still happy came home after loss…”

Knox concluded by reflecting on Buffalo’s unique environment:“It’s special place. You hear from guys come different teams…talk about how much love being here…It’s place I call home…it’ll always be special me [and] this place continue being special…”
