On Thursday night, the Buffalo Bills were defeated by the Houston Texans with a final score of 23-19 at NRG Stadium. The game was marked by a series of injuries affecting both teams, but the Bills were hit particularly hard on both offense and defense.
Left tackle Dion Dawkins expressed optimism about the remainder of the season, stating, “We still have opportunities to play; that door [isn’t] shut. … We have a chance next week to show our stuff.”
Quarterback Josh Allen suffered a scare in the first quarter after being hit from behind and landing awkwardly on his left shoulder. He reported numbness for a moment but said he felt fine after returning to the sidelines.
The Bills’ defense lost linebacker Terrel Bernard to an elbow injury and cornerback Maxwell Hairston to a concussion; neither returned to play. Head coach Sean McDermott commented on Hairston’s status: he had not yet received details from trainers but confirmed Hairston was held out after taking a hit.
Additional defensive players also faced setbacks during the game. Cornerback Christian Benford aggravated his shoulder but was cleared to return, as was defensive end A.J. Epenesa following a neck injury.
On offense, wide receiver Khalil Shakir underwent concussion evaluation and was cleared to continue playing. Dawkins also passed concussion protocol, with Ryan Van Demark stepping in temporarily during his absence. Offensive tackle Spencer Brown sustained a shoulder injury but remained in the game after evaluation, while guard O’Cyrus Torrence appeared to pull something in his leg but did not leave the field due to limited backup options.
The Texans also experienced injuries throughout the contest. However, Buffalo’s numerous injuries left them in an uncertain position, especially given how many offensive linemen required medical attention or played through physical issues against Houston’s defense.
“We got to stay in this thing, man,” McDermott said postgame. “We grind and we grind it out, that’s what you do. You compete; you sign up. This is what you do. No matter [if] you have no injuries or [if] you have the injuries that we have … we fight. That’s what we do. We fight, we battle and we push forward.”
A missed extra point early in the game proved costly for Buffalo late in regulation. After scoring on their opening drive with a rushing touchdown by James Cook III, place kicker Matt Prater missed the extra point attempt—leaving Buffalo trailing by four instead of three points at game’s end.
Allen led a late drive with contributions from Shakir and wide receiver Joshua Palmer that brought hope for a comeback. The offense faced several long-yardage situations following sacks by Houston’s Danielle Hunter and penalties such as Dawkins’ false start on fourth-and-one.
“I gotta do better,” Dawkins said regarding his penalty.
Ultimately, Allen’s final pass attempt toward Palmer was intercepted by safety Calen Bullock, ending Buffalo’s hopes for victory.
Reflecting on missed opportunities throughout the game—including incompletions and penalties—Allen said: “Had a chance to win it there at the end, so that we did a good job of staying in it… Driving the ball on that last, fast drive, and we got to find a way to get it – and we didn’t.”
The loss leaves Buffalo facing uncertainty as they look ahead to their next matchup amid ongoing personnel challenges.
